Our eldest lad has awful sinus trouble. So you can understand, during the winter he is more often than not bunged up. Come Hay fever season there is a new set of problems and he can be streaming and sneezing and coughing. In fairness to him though, he is a great kid and with his quiet way just gets on with it and never complains. Unlike his dad who when taken ill or under the weather will cry for a team of paramedics and the aid of a stretcher.
But as parents it is very hard to ascertain when he is sick or not. There have been many times over the years when we have gone to the Doctor with suspected, tonsillitis, throat infection etc...to be told, “No..he just has a cold” or....”No...just a bit of an allergy.”
A bit like the fifty euro that seems to be allergic to Daddy’s pocket on the way out. The drive home can be an interesting one. On the one hand, happy in the knowledge that my lovely little boy will live to fight another day, but inwardly growling at the fifty euro to be told there is nothing wrong with him.
Anyway as you can imagine, we (must include the good lady in all major decisions) are always reluctant to take him to the Doctor, in fairness, not just because of the fee but because of the type he is, it is very hard to know if there is anything wrong with him! He is a quiet lad, and if the kitchen roof was to fall in around him and we were all to be found underneath the rubble, he would answer the cries of “Are you alright?!” with a shrug and a nod. Note to self: Must get the builder to look at rafters.
I digress. Last week he had a very heavy cold. Not to debilitating in fairness but that heavy mucus, snotty voice was prevalent and it was obvious he was under the weather. However, he got better after a few days and all was well. Or so it seemed. On Saturday he came in to say he was a little deaf in one ear. It being Saturday and the fact that it wasn’t an emergency, we decided the best thing was to leave it until Monday and to see was there any improvement. Monday came along and he was still a little deaf so my good wife made an appointment with the doctor for the afternoon. It transpired he had an ear infection but my reason for writing today good reader is what happened in the waiting room. As I have said, in the past we have been and gone to the Doctor and there has been no apparent sickness so you can see why we like to make absolutely sure before we set up camp in the surgery every two weeks. That and the fifty euro!
So as my wife was sitting in the waiting room to be called in with junior, she said she would make one last check to see was the doctor really needed. After the following conversation, we both agreed it was money well spent.
My wife asked himself,
“What ear is it?”
To which he replied,
“2014”
