Keep it Clean.
When I was younger you didn’t need a license for a pop concert. In actual fact I remember going to Croke Park and seeing people sitting up on the high wall at the Hill 16 end. I also remember the St. Patricks day parade, people hanging out of lamp posts. You see then we didn’t need to worry about health and safety and being sued.
Now that I think of it I also remember you could actually run in the school yard. You didn’t have a teacher telling you to stop running in case someone fell and there was a case brought against the school. We didn’t have an accident book either to log each accident “for the record”.
It was a great time for Dogs too. They could poop on the road and they didn’t have their owner coming around behind them with a bag to collect it. Heaven forbid. I suppose now though it is vitally important and we have found out that dog poop can kill nations if left unattended.
It’s great that we have these rules to help us through life. Where would we be without the Civil Servants that make these great decisions. In light of Garth Brooks ( or Gareth Brooks as he is being repeatedly called by the rule makers) It’s great that we were able to waive the 50 Million euro in revenue so the license agreement wasn’t broken. I mean could you imagine if two concerts extra were played and 160 thousand people enjoyed themselves? That’s all well and grand but the policy would have been broken. Can you imagine how the people in Dublin City Council would have to deal with that? There would be uproar and meetings and a few project managers would be called in. Heck can you imagine the amount of Consultants that would have to be employed. No it was best to play it safe. Tick the box and don’t allow for anything outside the norm. I mean it’s more than anyone’s job would be worth.
The main thing is that the policy wasn’t broken and the “license” can remain unaltered in a file, safe in the knowledge that someone has stuck to their guns and to hell with the rest of the concert goers. It really is good that these civil servants are on top of their game and the country will be a better place for it. Sure the place smacks of efficiency any time you ring a government department, I know you can all attest to it. The courteous manner in which the phones are answered and the never being put on hold is amazing. I mean imagine if you were pushed from department to department it just wouldn’t happen.
No, its good to have a great little country where the GAA can blame the council, the Promoter can blame the council and the council can blame Gareth or Gary Brooks for not complying to the license. Still the people around Croke Park have to be felt for. I mean imagine crowds coming near a football stadium. I suppose they didn’t notice the stadium was there when they bought their house. They were probably too busy planning on curtain colours and gardens to notice it. I mean I have to sympathise....you’d never notice it there in the middle of the City. It’s great Garf wont be playing now. Because the other eighty thousand that come week in week out to Croke Park on a Sunday are not a problem. No they can be coped with you hardly notice them..It’s the Stetson brigade coming for five nights for the first time in seventeen years...they are the real problem. The cheek of them...with no license.
The streets will be empty now around Croke Park and the residents can walk their dogs in peace. Hope they clean up after them because it’s one sorry mess after another down that way.
