At what age should a man stop wearing jeans? It’s a conundrum that has bounced around my mind all through my thirties. And now in my forties...I feel like a footballer who is on the last year of his contract. My dad never wore jeans even in his thirties but in fairness that was in the seventies. Things have moved on. Or am I just trying to justify things by saying it is ok for a guy my age to wear a hoodie? We see dads now in trendy t-shirts, shoes etc that can be worn by men in their twenties also. So perhaps things have changed.
I think denim is a different story. Unless you are a cowboy or Ralph Lauren, denim on older men can look terrible. Especially around the rear end area. It can develop into one large rectangle of expanse. The legs, most people can get away with ( will discuss skinny jeans later.) It is just when things go higher that the problems start. Firstly, the high waistband. Most men in this genre like to have their now increasing belly hidden so they mask it over with a high belt and the front of their pants. This makes most of them look like something like a cross between Humpty Dumpty and the Michelin man. A shirt will usually be tucked in tight and this can make things look altogether too much and may be bringing some of them back to when they were schoolboys and their mother was sending them off in the morning.
The point is, when should we start to realise what is age appropriate or what is not? Or perhaps should we care? If you are sixty, overweight and comfortable in a baseball cap and an earring, should it matter what the rest of the world thinks? Or should we conform to the way things “should be.”
Or what about men wearing suits on Sundays? In days gone by every man would wear a suit and tie and perhaps a hat. Now a lot of men don’t get out of bed until teatime and even then the only type of suit worn will have the word track in front of it.
Of course this may be the younger man. The man who wears the aforementioned skinny jeans. Skinny jeans, which came in about three years ago have been the great debate of many men’s wardrobes. Fashions come and go, We have had tight jeans, bell bottom jeans, flares and in the last ten years bootleg. But skinny jeans are a different thing. To be honest they can only be worn by a certain type of man. A skinny one. Skinny jeans and fat thighs don’t go. Skinny jeans and older men don’t go. Skinny jeans on older men with fat thighs should have a criminal offence attached to it.
Either way I can’t see myself wearing “slacks.” I’m sorry but I think to go down that line could be defeatist. In the past if you saw a man in Farah slacks you respected him as “older.” Or your dad’s brother. Pale blue Farah slacks with the orange “f” on the tab and a pair of George Webb shoes signified that, that man would never wear jeans. I just want to know at what stage of their lives did these men go into a shop and walk passed the jeans section to look at the acrylic nylon slacks and decide.
“Yeah....they would look good on me.”
If anyone can let me know, I’m the one in the Nike trainers and gold necklace. Yo!
